You are getting sleepy…

When you hear the word hypnosis, you may picture a mysterious hypnotist as popularised in books, films and television. This menacing, bearded (typically a goatee) man speaks some ‘magical’ hypnotic phrase (as per above), or waves a pocket watch back and forth, guiding his subject into a sleep like, zombified state. Once hypnotised, the subject is compelled to ‘obey’ no matter what the request.

This popular myth about hypnotism actually bears little resemblance to reality. In fact, subjects in a hypnotic trance are not slaves to their "masters" - they have absolute free will. And they're not really in a state of sleep - they're actually hyper-attentive which is actually why hypnosis is so effective

Hypnotherapy taps into the subconscious mind. The conscious mind is analytical, logical and critical, whereas the subconscious is much more responsive and open to different suggestions and associations which qualified hypnotherapists are trained to use to help ‘retrain’ their clients thinking.

So where should hypnotherapy be used?

There are many applications, for example pain relief during childbirth, but more typically, people use hypnosis to help them stop smoking, or to deal with phobias such as flying, heights etc. It can also be highly effective for people who want to improve their confidence, deal with stress, grief or depression and can even help improve sporting performance!

When compared with other treatments, hypnotherapy produces fast, powerful and permanent results, with significant progress generally being made very quickly (naturally depending on the nature and significance of the problem).
